Originally designed to sit at sidewalk level, this project started as a single-phase request that's since turned into a lasting partnership. Our challenge was to create a distinct sense of privacy while maximizing the limited square footage of the space. The result was a naturally secluded "room" achieved by sinking the patio below street level and adding lush planting for added privacy.
What began as a single phase adapted into a multi-year partnership as this homeowner’s family grew and lifestyle changed. Originally designed to sit at sidewalk level, our challenge was to create a distinct sense of privacy while maximizing the limited square footage of the space. The result was a naturally secluded "room" achieved by sinking the patio below street level and adding lush planting for added privacy.
The front courtyard has become an unexpected neighborhood gathering hub for events like Trick-or-Treating and 4th of July, proving the design successfully bridged the gap between public invitation and private distinction.

We maximized the usable space by opting for thin corten retaining walls vs more traditional hardscaping.
To maximize the usable space, thin, contemporary Corten steel was used for retaining walls instead of thick hardscape, freeing up valuable area for planting.

Built-in seating eliminated the need for bulky furniture, saving space and encouraging impromptu use.
Custom Brazilian hardwood Ipe seating was integrated into the design. This eliminated the need for bulky, movable furniture, saving space and encouraging impromptu use.

Generous planting beds provided a lush, living screen for privacy.
The slim Corten system allowed for generous planting beds, which provide a lush, living screen for privacy. The space remains inviting—neighbors can be called down to join the fire pit—but private enough for quiet coffee or wine.
